new hard drive

i have a dell optiplex 350mt , i purchased a maxtor one touch 111 60gb ext hard drive, now i have to replace the internal hard drive. my os is windows xp my question is can i transfer my os to ext hard drive while replacing the internal one or do i need to purchase a new one? im not very computer knowledgble so any help would be much appreciated.
 
External drives in regards to usb models are intended for storage and file tranfers between systems like your desktop and laptop you take along with you as one example. Those are not bootable type drives like you would see with a usb flash memory type.

Once you remove the original drive with the preinstalled copy of Windows or other OS you will need to see a fresh clean install with a totally new disk after seeing that partitioned and formatted to be ready for use. The drivers for the main board as well as any devices like an expansion card for video or sound would need to be downloaded from the manufacturer's support site for that specific model. The disk set the system sees included is tied to the original drive where hidden restoration files are stored.
