new hard drive

Im not a computer genius so give me a break. I got a killer deal on an older dell inspiron 2500 laptop that looks brand new. It works fine but has windows ME on it. I have a buddy that can give me a copy of XP. I was wanting to upgrade to maybe a 160gb hard drive and adding memory. Is it possible and if so how much memory would be good? Also are the hard drives on ebay any good? Thanks.
 
You can still get new hard drives for that machine. A 160gb drive would be pretty cheap. You will need to get the PATA/IDE type version.

You can fit up to 512MB of ram into that machine. It will take 144pin PC100 SODIMMS at a max of 256MB a piece.
