OK i got a brand spanking new hard drive... now how do i format it. I can't use F disk cause u cant even see it. or windows doesn't know what drive it is, there is no icon or anything. But it does say new hard drive detected, so it is there(pluged in and stuff). how do i format it.

oh just so you know i've tryed computer management thing in control pannel, harddrives not showing up. i had same problem with last new harddrive, but i formatted that by instailling windows then deleting it .. i dnt really want to do that again.

First of all what "TYPE" of drive are you talking about here??? Is this a new sata or eide drive you have installed? For either type you should the make and model seen on the initial post screen when first turning your system on. For an ide drive that would mean the jumper is set correctly. For sata the drive and cable are good there.

Not seeing a new drive in the Disk Management tool suggests a drive not being connected to power(forget the power plug?) or the wrong position for the drive's jumper at the rear of the drive's casing(MA=master for end, SL=slave for middle, CS=cable select for either or detection). With sata the wrong type or bad cable or possibly bad drive? Let's see what you have first.

its a new seagate 320gig sata 16mb cache harddrive, I've pluged in sata cable and power cable, windows and BIOS does detect it, windows just keeps saying new harddrive detected. but i cant find it in that disk management. and yes there is power cause when i touch it theres sligh vibrations.

There should be an icon now seen on the taskbar for the "new hardware found". Upon right clicking this you will probably need to then have Windows install the appropiate sata drivers from the board's software/driver cd or download an updated set from the board's own support site.

If seen on the post screen when first powering up the system or on a restart you know that the system bios is properly detecting the new drive. Now it's time to get the sata drivers in and then partition/format the drive itself. When booting up with the XP cd you will need a floppy with correct drivers ready for the XP installer to load those first in order to detect the drive. You then use the option seen in the first install screen to partition the drive or you even use GParted live for cd the Linux partitioning tool. Once the one or more intended are created simply use the Disk Management for formatting.

If the BIOS and Windows both detect the drive it is in computer management, you are probably just looking in the wrong spot. It will be in the right pane in the disk management section, if you don't see it in the list at the top, it should still be in the bottom section of the right pane.

The drivers should be installed automatically.

Getting back to the formatting, after you've made sure the drive was recognized, simply go into "My Computer", right click on the drive, and click Format.

Uninitialized drives don't appear in my computer. You have to use computer management to partition/format a new drive (or the windows installer or some other 3rd party utility)

I know, or drives that only consist of unallocated space. I prefer to use Partition Magic, but thats just me.

usually when you get a hard drive it includes a partition and installing software... mine was data lifeguard on a WD but dunno what Seagate gives..

Precisely correct on the 3rd party! GParted is still used along with Vista despite the finally "smartened up" MS team including the "FORMAT" option in along with the installer's abiliry to partition and now even the ability to resize them. Once you create the partition GParted or a retail product still remains the way to "move" partitions in order to create another one on the same drive. With XP? Well the Disk Management is still good for format and deletion along with reassigning drive letters.
