New HD and loading XP problem

I have a Puget system, with 2 hard drives, c for Op Sys. and all programs. D for all data and stuff. C drive crashed and a new one installed. The D drive was ok and all data was ok. After loading xp and before loading new drivers, I found that drive C was my old D drive with all data intact. Drive G was where the programs were. The D, E and F were other devices. What happened and did I miss something when I loaded XP? I have discussed with Puget Customer Svc and they want all drivers before the look at the drives but I can tell they are not sure I am correct. I am not techy but I know how to read Windows Explorer and Disk Management.
Any suggestions.
 
You should always disconnect any hard drives besides the boot drive when installing windows especially if they have data on them. Now you will have to start all over again to get the drive letters the way you want them.
 
Re load xp

Thanks. Not knowing exactly what I am doing, if I disconnect the data drive, and load xp, how do I tell the system that I want "my data" to reside on D and not C, which I assume a My Data folder will be present on C after loading XP.
 
As long as you have your data on the other drive, leave it disconnected until you get XP loaded and then connect the drive. To have your "my documents" reside on the D drive, do this.... right click on "my documents" icon and click on properties. Change the directory from C to D. You may want to move your data that is currently on the D drive to the "my documents" folder which will be created on the D drive when you are done.
 
JohnB, everything worked as you suggested. OP sys on C and after connecting other HD and DVD and flopy, 2nd HD was D as I wanted. BUT, then problems started when I began loading drivers from web sites given to me by Cust Svc Puget. So, I decided to wait until Oct and get Geek Squad to load Windows 7. For me this is the best way to move forward, too many frustrations and waisted hours so far. With my lap tops I can wait until Oct to bet the desk top back working. Thanks for your help, each time I ask for help I learn more and more.
 
It has been a while so I can not remember exactly but first, I was not able to load the the Windows Media update disk which was the 3rd disk in the MS pkg (SRCLIENT.DLL MISSING, COULD NOT ADD). I then began loading the drivers in the order directed. the one problem i rememeber was when attempting the load the last driver (an MSI driver) I got the error msg FAILED RPC SERVER NOT AVAILABLE. so I stopped there. I also got a msg (unable to install install sield script runtime) with loading the Marvell lan driver. I have been thinking about trying one more time thinking maybe I missed something along the way.
