my current computer only has one hard drive of course. i am trying to add another one. when i installed my dvd burner, the ribbon cable looked like this one so i just plugged it into the middle plug. but the one on my hd doesnt have the middle 'slave' connection. should i take out the current ribbon and add one that does have the slave connection to hook my new hd up?
thanx in advance

what is the hard drive you got? the ribbon doesn't have the master slave jumper settings on that plug they should be right next to it. you can always switch which is master and slave.

The master/slave jumpers are on the drives themselves, not the cable(s).. as stated above in other words.

yea the current hd is the master, the one i am going to be adding will be the slave drive. i just want to know if i can take out the current cable w/o a middle plug and put in one that has the middle plug for my new hd and be alright.

btw, this is the one i got

That's an SATA drive, it won't work with your IDE cable.

IDE vs SATA

oh

then how do you recomend i should install the new drive?

edit: i looked at it again. the current drive is ata/ide. it has both plugs in it. on the new drive, i would just use the sata plug right?

ATA and IDE are the same thing.. SATA is Serial ATA, it's different than ATA.

ATA is the blue plug above, better known as IDE.

I looked up the specs on the drive you linked to and it's SATA II.. you'll need a board with SATA or SATA II on it, or you'll need an add-on SATA or SATA II PCI card.

What motherboard do you have? If you don't know, then what kind of computer do you have?

You can look at the motherboard inside, if you have SATA ports.. you can use this drive.. otherwise you'll need an SATA add-on card, you can find one here.

You'll want a card that provides internal SATA ports.. you'll also want SATA II, which supports 3.0GB/s.

how do those cards work?

i dont know much about this kind of stuff now. i was under the impression this drive would work fine. i took some pics of my comp. maybe they will help.

That's a fairly new computer.. try moving those big gray IDE cables out of the way and see if you can take a higher res. pic of the motherboard for me to look at.

Also, what make an dmodel is that PC?

In the third pic, there is a white and a black plug on the board.. those are SATA ports.

You'll need an SATA cable in order to use that HDD, but it will work for you :)

Next to the ports, it says SATA.. does it happen to have anything written after it, such as SATA II, SATA 2, SATA 3.0GB/s or SATA 1.5GB/s ?

cool. is this what it looks like? i searched google for a pic and this looks like the only thing close to what would plug into my drive and my comp

You'll need either this if you have SATA, or this if you have SATA 2. Colors will vary, and you can choose any length you would like.. 18" should work for you, though.

You'll also need to see that your power supply has a power connection for SATA HDDs, but it should since your board does and your computer is a pre-built PC.

The SATA power connector looks like this;

This is your motherboard, you have 2 Sata 1.5 ports

You need one of these

On a W/D drive, put a jumper on the pins second from the left for Sata 1.5 and I think that drive has Sata power connector and a 4 pin molex power connector. You can use either power connector but not both.

Way to butt in :P

heres a pic of the drive

the cables you posted dont look like they would fit in there? also, the drive says on it...
"Master/Slave jumper not required for SATA jumpered pins 3 and 4 enabled PUIS (Power Up In Standby)"

so i just get a cable the connects the drive and then into one of the white or black plugs and im set?

You use the Sata power connector, if your power supply does not have one you will need one of these

The small connector is your Sata cable that plugs into the motherboard, the larger slot is the Sata power connector that goes to the power connector from the power supply. And the jumper is the second set from the left for Sata 1.5, has nothing to do with master and slave, last photo on the bottom
