Hey I just installed a HD for the first time in my new comp. Its a Maxtor 500gb Sata but the computer is only reading it as a 127 gb HD. Why is that? Also i read somewhere to remove the jumper to get it faster, is that correct?

removing the jumper will NOT make it faster, and as far as i know, sata hdds don't have jumpers, but i've only used ide drives...

But yes, check if there are partitions on the drive. if there are, delete them all, then format the entire drive to ntfs if you will be acsessing it on a windows pc. I would use a gparted live cd to manage the partitions, but there is a built-in app in windows, but i prefer gparted.

Did you install XP and did you use the original XP disc instead of one which had SP1, SP2, or SP3 applied to it? You need one of these to be able to use the full size of the drive.

If you have access to a burner just download SP3. Then use a program called nLite (free) to slipstream SP3 to your XP CD.

Thanks everyone for their help. Downloaded nLite and followed directions that were online and got me a xp pro cd with sp3 thanks. Now that computer recognized the hd and have full capacity
