New HD Needed

I'm trying to find a fair gaming HD. Would any HD do? I'm considering going with something that has like 120gb at 7200rpm, nothing fancy.

I've noticed on NewEgg that a lot of people are getting 37gb HD that are 10,000rpm but I don't know what difference it would make.

Yesterday I bought a DVD burner and while installing it my HD decided to take a poop and started to smoke. None of my CD bays will open nor will my floppy drive power on, does this happen when you take out the HD?

I think for most gaming a 7200 rpm drive by a respectable manufacturer (Seagate, Hitachi, Maxtor, Western Digital, etc) should be fine. IMO the premium you pay for a 10000 rpm drive isn't worth any small performance increase you gain.

Ouch!

Since I'm asking questions what are the advantages of having 2 HDs'?

As long as there's power to them they should at least open.

More space, ability to back up important data on a separate drive, more orangized - ie put multimedia on one drive and OS and programs on other drive

It's a strange question as you should not power on your system without the hard drive anyway as it holds your operating system. Also it sounds as though you might have more trouble then not having enough hard drive space as it sounds as though you might have shorted somthing out. Did you shut down the pc and then switch the power supply then unplug it from the wall before opening your pc case?

Yeah I powered down, unplugged, etc.

I have a CD-RW Drive, DVD Drive, DVDRW-CDRW Drive, and a Floppy Drive

None of them work when powered on. They won't power up or turn on. But I'm curious how they might have shorted?!?

If none of your drives will power up, then it's your PSU. I'd go out and buy a new one to make sure. You can always return the PSU.

I just remembered I have a old PSU and am going to try that when I go home in about 2 hours after class.

Any of the major brands are fine, but I'd look at some of the larger capacity models too. Sometimes, the difference in price is only a few dollars... same thing goes with 2MB versus 8MB cache. By the way, Circuit City is having a sale this week. After rebates, you can get a 200GB Western Digital for $89.99.
