I have a Acer Aspire 3100 laptop and the HD drive stated to rattle at start up then died. Now the HD will not boot up anymore. I bought a new HD for it and I do not have a systems disk for it (never came with the laptop). Can anyone tell me how I can get one for this? I contacted Acer and they say it is not registered and can not help.

you might be able to have someone extract the info off your old hard disk. if the actual disks are still intact the info should still be there. if not, you could just buy some disks off of ebay or something.

Can you tell us more please
Did the old h/d when booting go round in circles or give a message why windows wouldnt load, i.e. ntldr missing, win 32 missing or did you get bsod,

Old HD would run then screen go blank. It asks to repair files or start normal. I did both and nothing happens it just freezes. I was told old hard drive reader arm is shot inside HD.

Nothing happens when F8 is pressed and I can here clicking noise coming from HD like the arm is going back and forth and disk is spinning

A clicking noise isn't right. You should only hear the disks spin. Like I said before it is possible for someone to extract the data

You can try to get the data from your HD by downloading Hiren's Boot CD and burning to a CD and booting from it and selecting "Mini Windows XP". Then you can go to My Computer and see what you can do there.

Getting info from the old HD is a loss cause. I put the new HD in and installed XP. This system had Vista. My problem now is I can not get my wireless or sound to work. Do I need to go back to XP on this machine or can I get it with new drivers?. This system came with no recovery disk of any kind.

Why don't you try typing your computer manufacturer and model into Google followed by the words "Windows XP drivers" and see what you find?
