New HD stops formatting/never begins

New: WD5001AALS

1. A simple remove the 250GB Seagate & replace w/ a new WD 500GB HD. Already replaced HD once thinking the original HD was defective (same problem). I also changed CD’s & none of the cards/cable/memory is loose.
2. Installed HD & restart booting off XP CD. On occasion, the LED on the monitor will change color and it will start the blue windows format screen only to hang during the format or never start (0%) with a solid HD activity light (I accept all format defaults).
3. On other occasions after restarting, the monitor LED will never change color and the machine will just hang and never enter setup.
4. Sometimes I have disconnect the power cord to get it to boot properly or a combination of things. Also the power light on the front does not always go on (blink green) and sometime only goes on if I disconnect the power like I need to discharge a diode or something.

I’m I going crazy? I’m going to relook at the BIOS again - if I can get there.

you may be right. then again, myself, i would jumper the power button, or even replace the power cord to the computer. start from the beginning. only reason i mentioned power cord is because my daughter had something similar. guess what? A wabit chewed through most of the wires. just saying start over. that rabbit chewed through 70% of one side of the line. he's lucky too.

New HD stops formatting/never begins & rabbits

This computer is using that same power cord. I'll have to look at the buttons. The available power LED on the machine is not lit energized all the time, Hmmm, that's a clue but it boots if I push it in for 5 seconds

Rabbits (wabit) Solution: I had two rabbits hopping around my house for 4 years and refrigerator drain pans for the sh%$. 60% of the cords in my house have splices until we trapped them to the first floor. I had to jumped over child gates on the stairs which they ate thru until I used wire. I had to wrap all the cords in aluminum foil and wrap a old sock with electrical tape at the recepticle/plug. I must of paid for 100' ft of cat5. I got so frustrated I let one go when the kids didn't care and it got hit by a car in front of my house and came back in the house limbing around. I had to pay to put it down.

UPDATE: computer power light is extremely dim with machine off and plugged in. Unpluging the power cord for 5 minutes and then pluging it it in again sometimes gives me a green flashing light. Power Supply Unit (PSU)? Comments? What votage do I buy?

Sounds like you need to replace the PSU(power supply unit) What is your system specs that you are running? What brand and model of power supply are you using? You may have possible motherboard damage already.

I would suggest a cage or rabbit stew! I would put my own kids in a cage before I would deal with that:D

....wow thats quite cruel :/ i feel bad for the rabbit, and yes, rabbits chew. you have to get used to that, we just wrapped our wires in stuff they would have a hard time chewing around, and would let them outside alot of times... we had a hutch for our one rabbit, however he did end up dying from unknown causes. something got into his stomach and clogged him up...that was a rough 48 hours there...dont want to go through that again...having to decide to put down a family member is hard :/

but yea, check wires...thats about the best you can do i think...could be arcing or something...crazy tho

I'm going to buy a PSU today and I'll let you know. It's a ASUS MB. I ordered and configured the machine for my daughter and college. It's probably a expensive MB and I cut back on the PSU

Rabbit: Yes we had hutches but these were house potty trained. The problem with the hutch who is going to feed it. In the winter now you have to walk out in the snow usually at night, after supper, down a path that was now ice when it's it's cold and windy and the water dish freezes in twenty minutes, and you need a flashlight and it runs to the opposite end of the hutch. I'm going to get a PSU

Installed new PSU. Hard drive setup formats appears to compete now, however, it gives a setup failed at the end of the format. Setup appears to be doing something because it's giving me the following partition choices to format now. Each failed format creates a new failed partition? Still trying to get into the BIOS.

- Unpartition, 3MB
- D: Partition 3 [unknown], 106 MB (106 MB Free)
- C: Partition 1 [unknown], 831 MB (831 MB Free)
- D: Partition 2 [unknown], 265 MB (265 MB Free)

WD already tested the drive and replaced it with this one. This is the second one. I guess it time to give the machine to someone more knowledgable then me.
