New HDD

ok so i am getting a new HDD for my computer and all i need to know is: if i use the recovery disks to boot up my computer with the new HDD in it, and then use a backup from the old HDD and restore it on my new one, will my computer be exactly like it was with the old HDD in it?

I'm in a similar position, I also want to upgrade my HD. I'm assuming this won't work though because microsoft probably has some sort of safeguard against this.

Do you have a Windows XP or a Windows Vista Disk to load onto the new hard drive? What are you using exactly to backup your hard drive information with? Floppy disks? Flash Drives?

its a windows vista recovery DVD, and i am backing up my HDD on an external mass storage device, using this ISO image thing.

Are you replacing the old HD? Or you are adding more HD?

If you are replacing, the ISO method should work as long as you have some program to read the ISO image when you are done replacing the HD. You would need to format the new HD before you can use it.

If you are just adding HD, I reckon you can just plug it and Windows should be able to recognize it right away. Just format the new HD before storing any data in it. However, still do the backup with ISO just in case anything goes wrong with the installation of new HD.
