You will get many notices of updates, some won't get installed the first time you try. Just go to windows update in your programs click on it and click on check for updates. Then try again.
Many of the updates you get are for protection and you get them all the time.
I would advise upgrading to the Windows 7 home Edit. and forget Vista.;)

If the failed update was a High Priority one, then you should try again. Don't do anything intensive on the PC at the same time updating is occurring. System files may be in the process of being updated so it's not a good time to be messing around.

Updates occasional fail so a one-timer is not a big deal. If it regularly occurs then you should look into it further. You should also check to see if the updates fully download - the progress is indicated for downloading and then installing. I've found that IE, downloading updates, does not compete very well with other online activities so you should keep those at a minimum too.

restart the PC and once it's done go with windows update tool and see if it works if not try this

1. Open Start >> Run or press window key + r

2. Type “services.msc” (without quotes) and Click OK , this will open services window.

3. Right click on Automatic Updates Service and select Stop.

4. After the service is stopped, press window key + r

5. Type “%windir%\SoftwareDistribution” (without quotes) and press enter.

6. Open the Download folder and delete all contents of the Download folder.

7. Close the window, press Window Key + r ( or Open Start >> Run )

8. Type “services.msc” (without quotes) and Click OK

9. Right click on Automatic Updates Service and select Start.

10. That’s it Done

once that's done open it and run update now and it should do it properly.
