I am taking a computer class and had a question about operating systems.

Are windows, linux and Macintosh designed to be used as a primary boot operating system on both the PC and the Mac computers or exclusively on one or the other? Not sure if I asked that right. Will linux work with Mac or windows. Thanks for the help.

linux works on virtually anything

windows runs on mainly intel based systems, but in the past has run on others. Apple macs used not to use intel chips, so you had to use linux or mac os, but now Apple use intel chips, so its possible to run windows on a mac using something called boot camp. Its possiblle, but very tricky to get mac os running on a pc too, however its illegal.

First of all, welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy your stay and that we can help you out with any computer questions you might have.

Secondly, you can boot off any OS, that is in that computer, as long as the OS was installed with that hardware in the computer. You can install windows on 1 PC and then take it to another and boot windows on that PC, it just won't function properly.

You can install windows on any PC, including a mac. You can't install Mac OS on a PC. But you can install linux / ubuntu on any computer.

Hope this helps.

Like Cohen said you can run Windows on a MAC, but not MAC OS on a PC. Intel has nothing to do with it, whether the PC is Intel or AMD based won't affect the OS.

what i meant by intel was the x86 based architecture vs other architechtures like PowerPc (formerley used by macs) or DEC Alpha (an example of another architecthure formerley supported by Windows)

You should've mentioned AMD with Intel, but I hear what you're saying. :)
