Just thinking of adding a notebook to my computer and was wondering if anyone had some good suggestions.

Dont need sometihing thats going to run my nieborhood just some micro office files for my wifes very small buisness and some web surfing.

Not much gaming there will be some picture sharing.

Most of the storage will be on my desk top we r just looking for a decent notebook to network into r desktop and for wireless freedom!!!

Any suggestion would greatly be appreciated

$1000 Max but would love to spend a few hundred less
 
You probably want a Toshiba... Something in the Satellite series... Great history as far as price and hardware reliability... Make sure to get the WiFi built in.
 
Another brand that's pretty good is Averatec. I've had mine for around a year now and not had any major problems out of it.

The only problem with it, and probably most any laptop today is HEAT! Mine has never overheated, but it sure gets darn hot. Intel's usally run much cooler than AMD processors in laptops, so I typically would head that route... However, I beleive most any laptop today will have heat issues of some sort

it really depends on what u want. (BTW check out dells when they have good coupons (www.notebookreview.com))

screen really doesn't matter that much, the hdd i personally wouldn't take the 4200rpm hdd unless i had to, the ram aslong as ur not gaming 512mb is a pretty good amount, and really its just preferances.

Standard battery life for a laptop is over four hours these days. My Satellite meets that exactly, and it has a "desktop" processor. Basically, mobile processor = slower + longer battery life. It's all in what you plan to do with it. RAM... If you're running Windows, you want 512 or higher. 256 or higher for anything else. HD... Don't worry about size. No one ever uses it all up unless they record full length movies to their HD on a regular basis or something. Look at the RPM. Don't get anything less than 7200. Screen... A screen's a screen. If you're the only one looking (no one from the side), you're good with the cheapest one they got. If you're into abuse, get one with the special stuff on it so it doesn't get smashed or scratched. I would say that RAM is the most critical of all. If you plan on actually using it as a laptop, I'd get one with a desktop processor. Make sure it has the intake fan on the side. You're less likely to block it and overheat.

How would i know if im buy online and they dont say.

whats the best brand of note book in ur opinion!!! I thought it was dell so that tells u how much i know!

As far as the processor, if it has an M at the end, it's a notebook processor. For the fans, it should be in the detailed specs. I don't know any of the new ones that have intake fans on the bottom any more, anyway. Mine's four years old or so. My sister's is about a year old, and none of them we looked at had them on the bottom. Toshiba has always been #2 in support and reliability (behind Apple). Apple costs an arm and a leg (although quite arguably worth it), so yeah...
 
NO, do NOT get a desktop processor in a laptop UNLESS u plan on not taking it anywhere and DON'T want good battery life. Even if you wanted a desktop replacement, i'd recomend the Dell 9300 or the model that replaced it, the E1705 its got a 7800GT and 17" lcd, and all those other extras, and dell runs premotional offers ALL the time.

And for which brands are best, here is my opinion:

Lenovo (IBM)
Asus
Tosiba Dell HP (pretty much even)
Averatec, Acer (a little lower quality, but still very good)

Those are the mainstream brands pretty much, but dont get me wrong the other brands are mostly awesome, some of them up there with asus and lenovo. just ask the nice people at notebookreview.com, they'll hook u up.

I have a 2.8 GHZ Celeron, and I get 4:30 hours.
 
First off, what battery do u have, and in what laptop.
Second of all, mobile processors are just as much of a powerhouse as desktop processors, only with battery life savings. a PM 1.6-PM 1.7 is about equal to a P4 2.8- P4 3.0 processor. But if u need another example, the PM 2.26 will kick most desktop processor's asses, and runs cooler and with less power.
 
True, "mobile" processors are in no way slower than desktop processors. If anything I'd prefer a mobile processor, even in my desktop. they tend to overclock better and provide the same amount of power with less heat.
