New laptop destroyed my network internet

I just bought a new laptop and plugged it in and began on setting up all the stuff needed after purchasing it. When I hooked up the internet I managed to get it to work along with the PC directly next to it which is connected by an ethernet cord to the router.

Every other wireless network in the house went offline though. Except this new laptop's wireless and the only PC connected with a cord. All other laptops, iPads and PS3s would not connect to the internet. I thought my family was joking about not having an internet. I checked my WiFi connections and all of a sudden my Network connection was no longer listed as DLink the way it use to be and has renamed itself after my new PC.

It seems to only have given an internet to this new PC along with the PC next to it which is connected through a cord. I don't know why this happened and have no clue how to fix it.

I want to set my internet connection so everyone in the house can use it. I'd also like a password to protect people from sapping the internet from outside the house but my main concern is getting my internet working for everyone in the house again. I've got no clue how to do this...I've never set up an internet connection before

How are you connected to the internet, modem, router? You should have the modem, connected to the router and then all the pc's connected to router either by cable or wireless. How many are connected by cable and how many by wireless? Seems the router may be bad unless you the network isn't setup correctly.

I can't imagine how it happened but it seems that the SSID for your router has been renamed. When you look at what wifi networks are available on the computers that no longer connect, do they see the router listed with the new name? If so, the easiest thing to do would be to configure them to use the new SSID. You'll need to know what the pass phrase is currently set to.

Another way to do it would be to log into the admin pages for the router and set the SSID back to what it had been.

What brand router do you have? Different routers have different addresses for the admin page. You could try pointing your browser to 192.168.0.1 with a userid of admin and pw admin but your best bet would be to go to the router support website to find out the info on how to log into the router admin page.

The network was up and running before I hooked in my new laptop. I don't think it's a busted router. The modem is hooked up to the router and the router is hooked up to the PC next to my laptop via ethernet cord. All other devices in the home are hooked by a wireless signal which has no stopped.

I would do a hard reset on your router and see if that works. What model of router do you have?

Yes it is. We have had a lot of users come here and tell us that partial internet to other computers have been lost when new computers connected. This is usually due to a bad router. But like i said, try doing a hard reset on it and set it back up or see if there is a firmware update for it.

I don't know anything about setting up network connections...I always had my uncle do it and he's no longer available for it.

What's a hard reset and where do I check for firmware updates?

Here is the FAQ section for that router on the D-Link website: http://www.dlink.com/support/faq/
You can find the answers for how to do a reset and how to update the firmware.

If you do a reset on the router, it will be back to all of its defaults. It's likely that none of your wireless computers will be able to connect (unless all the defaults were used previously) so you will need to reconfigure those computers/devices with new pass phrase and such.

I personally don't think the router is bad. If the new laptop connects via wifi OK and the wired computer works OK then that tells me the router is working. You just need to get all the wireless clients to see the same SSID and use the right pass phrase to get connected.

Here are the steps to access the admin page for the router:

Step 1 Open a web browser and enter the IP address of the wireless router in the address bar (default is 192.168.0.1). Press Enter.
Step 2 The username is admin and the default password is blank (nothing). Click OK.
Step 3 Click the Tools tab and then click Admin to the left.
