New Laptop Ideas?

So, I just got a new job to help pay for school, and I'm going to have some money soon so that I can buy a laptop for three things (probably): School, music editing, and maybe just a little basic video editing (nothing special, though). I'm thinking I'm going to have somewhere between $400 and $600 to spend, and that's all I can really afford. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have a 50GB Portable HardDrive for files, as well as a 30GB Ipod Video with plenty of space. Basically, I only plan on using the laptop's HD to store program files, and everything else (saved files, audio tracks, videos) are going to be saved to the portable and the Ipod (if necessary).

The thing is that I'm not very computer-knowlegable (don't know if that's the word), so I really don't know what to look for. But all of these computers have a crapload of space on the drive. In an effort to cost less, I'm looking for one without a whole lot of space (maybe even 60 or 70 GB). What should I look for, and is there any way I can find it for equal to or under $600?

I like this one, except for the 56k modem. I'm a complete noob to laptops/notebooks...can I upgrade the network adapter to 100Mpbs?

Students get a discount on the mac website, and they have a new type of laptop, can't think what they called it but its a cross between the power book and the i mac.

It says "Built-in high-speed wireless LAN (802.11b/g); 10/100 Mbps Ethernet LAN; V.92 high-speed modem", and im not an expert on lan stuff, but I have the same and it's pretty fast, way better than 56k
