New Laptop is so slow

Recently purchased a basic laptop; 1.6 GHz, 225MB RAM. Not the best specs but will suffice. Although I'm now starting to think the performance is starting to suffer. It's just so damn slow. Even when trying to switch between windows it gets 'stuck' and freezes.


Any ideas?

Do you have anything running in the background taking your memory?
I had the same issue with a Toshiba 2.8 Ghz 256 mb RAM, It was because of SQL Sever running.

I have quite a fair few processes running, but have no idea what a lot of them are.

Sort them by "Mem Usage" and tell me the first (Largest) 3-4 of them and their values.

Did you scan for spyware ?
If not download this program and update it then do a Full Scan.

i dont know it this will help much but if you go start>run then type in msconfig it will bring a window up and choose the startup tab. once your in there deselct all of the processes you can identify and once you then start up again it gets rid of some of the processes you use when you start up. it might help a little also.

give it a try.

Well it doesnt have much memory either...maybe you should buy a second stick of 256Mb ram.
should improve things.

Yeah, 256MB is nothing today. I'd suggest at least going to 512MB. You probably have many processes running in the background as well. If you could get rid of those, it should help too.
