Hi,
I need help because my wife wants a laptop fast and I need to make a decision. The screen size has to be 16'' plus, so I found this Sony VAIO for 7.99 with these specs,,

Sony VAIO VGN-FW590F3B Notebook PC - Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 2.20GHz, 4GB DDR2, 320GB HDD, Blu-Ray Burner, 16.4" Display, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Black

Is this processor like a I3 or i5 ? or if anyone could suggest a simular laptop that would be a better value?
Also can this Sony be upgraded in the future very easy?
Thanks Paul.

I would Rather go with the i3 or the i5
and i am guessing since its for your wife she wont be gaming so you wont be needing a dedicated video card so make sure you get a good processor like i3 would do for your purpose and atleast 3/4 gigs of DDR3 memory

How much is that?

I do recommend you get i3 or i5. C2D is last generation.

799.00

She likes the Sony VAIO brand and a 16 to 17' screen. If I go with I3 or I5 I have only found 1 so far under 1000 with the 16+ screen size. This would be a little easier if she would be open to other brands.

what would the laptop be used for.
If browsing,music,movies,microsoft office
then any laptop would suffice if its anything like photoshop, gaming, autocad then you will need an core i5 or atleast core i3 with a dedicated GPU

The laptop would seldom, or at all be used for any power consuming games but mainly be able to download music videos and basic Microsoft office programs. There would be some photo shop use but nothing requiring a high end video card. We would like to use it for netflixs hooked up to our TV. I just dont want it to be too slow for the these intended things. My desktop can handle anything else.
Thanks

Good choice all of them but OP wanted atleast 16" screen.

As someone pointed out if she doesnt care at all about gaming, then get an intel or other dedicated video card and focus on CPU (i3 or i7) and memory 3 GB or 4 GB. With those specs it will become a good work or surfing computer.

I did find a Sony with 17.3 I5 for 920....minus some microsoft office. She would rarely be travling with this laptop so the weight is not much of a problem.

I am about to make a choice.
At the Sony store website the new E model laptop just came out last week they say,,(EC290X) The main specs would be a 17.3 inch screen,Windows 7 home premium 64bit, 4 GIGS DDR3 RAM
Intel® Core™ i5-520M processor (2.40GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 2.93GHz. Built in web cam,
3X USB,2.0, y fi,
320 gb HD (7200 rpm), DVD/CDRW DRIVE,Included software Adobe bundle,
free ground shipping, Total 980.
Unlike New Egg and Tirger direct, the 980 does NOT include sales tax which brings it to 1039.
I could save some by going with the I3, but naaa.
What do you all think? should I??

processor is a core2 mobile, won't do nearly what an i3 or i5 can do.
ddr2 - really gonna hamper your blu-ray burning capabilities

all in all, for 799 you can do better - you pay a premium for sony, check out hp, compaq, acer, even dell (k maybe not dell, cant beleive i said that)

That toshiba would save me money, but the specs are not as good.
The Sony has 7200 rpm HD vs 5400, Intel I5 processor vs I3, 17.3 inch screen vs 16.0....yes I pay a 250 more for the Sony specs and the brand new model ( which does`nt mean much). but i probably would not regret the upgrade., but the extra 250 does hurt, ouch......My wife likes the Sony but if it were mine I would be looking at HP , Gateway and others.

you get what you pay for, simple as that

be weary of 7200rpm 2.5" drives, they suck power and burn out fast... make sure there's a solid warranty!

Thanks RC for the advice on the HD, I would only have 1 year warranty? without paying alot more for 2 or 3 years.
