New Laptop Options! And a greeting.

Hello guys! My name is Josh, and I'm here because... You guys know computers, and I, unfortunately, do not.

I'm going off to college soon (Virginia Tech, if you must know), and because I happened to receive a full ride, I have a bit of extra money to spend on a laptop. Which is where you guys come in...

I would like a laptop that has a good balance between memory, graphics, performance, and money.

My three current options are these three, but there is also this one. For the HP, go down and hit specs... Which do you think are worth investing into?

For the first link, if I were to get the first or third laptop, I would also spend a couple hundred to buy a nice external harddrive. Not so with the HP laptop because it doesn't have a USB 3.0...

Can you guys give me some advice on which would be better? The pros and cons of each. I'm an avid gamer... I at least want something that can run Minecraft with all settings on high with a good 20-30 FPS (which my current laptop cannot do), along with DotA 2 (when I get it) with all of its settings on med-high.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152307 Awesome lappy! For $1200, you want a HP?Come on.Look at avadirect, I would highly reccomend getting one there.

I don't really want that one because I feel like the only reason it's so expensive is because of its focus on gaming. I don't want a gaming laptop as much as I just want one with good memory and speed. It's gonna be for college, not necessarily entertainment.

So what, its focused on gaming? It is a great laptop for everything. But, I know, it probobly doesnt have good battery life or light weihgt. But, it is not more expensive because its for gaming, it has good memory, great speed, and basicly it is awesome.Going by that standard, you should get $1000 netbook!HP does not make the best lappys, and neither does dell, but hp laptops are some of the worst.I would get a series 7, I have a series 3 and a dell, but get no hp.

Well for starters a gaming laptop is not good for school if he is needing to rely on battery life. I would recommend a ultra book for school only because they are light weight, great battery life and they all are using about the same in parts so the quality varies very little between models.

I would recommend the one above, really sharp looking, well built and you can go to your local best buy and pick one up for the same price. Will do whatever you need for school. If your not gaming then the stock intel HD gpu will do everything you need in good video quality standards. This one is a little more expensive then some of the other ulta books but from what I have seen it seems a little more sturdy.

Thanks for the reply!

Don't get me wrong, I WILL be playing video games, and I would like them at a med-high quality. I just don't want a laptop that is too specifically geared for gaming.

The catch is that my aunt is buying me the laptop as my graduation gift, and so if she thinks it's a "gaming laptop" then she won't buy it.

She really likes the HP laptop in my original post... Is there anything wrong with it that should prevent me from getting that one?

If you're going to buy the HP DV7, then you should buy it in a configuration that includes the faster GPU and the 1920x1080 display. The particular model of HP DV7 listed there is not particularly good, because its configuration includes the Radeon 7470M instead of the Radeon 7690M XT (or GT 650M), and the stock 1600x900-resolution display instead of the upgraded 1920x1080-resolution display.

15.6" 1366x768 and 17.3" 1600x900 displays make things onscreen large, and tend to have very poor image quality due to low contrast. I recommend against buying laptops that have these types of displays to those who have a budget that allows them to get a suitable laptop that has a better display, and who don't require larger text for eyesight-related reasons.

The Radeon 7470M is likely to provide disappointing performance compared to the Radeon 7690M XT (DV7-6xxx generation) or NVIDIA GT 650M (newer model, DV7-7000 generation).

Follow this link to a saved configuration of the newer DV7, including the GT 650M and the 1920x1080 display. Apply coupon code NBY4296 to bring the price down to $1,049.99. Do not downgrade the display or the GPU.

Follow this link if you would like the smaller 15.6" DV6 instead.. This configuration includes the GT 650M and 1920x1080 display as well, and you shouldn't downgrade either of these components to their stock options. Coupon code NBW9325 will make it $949.99 ($100 cheaper).

These are not gaming laptops in the sense of being dedicated to gaming, but they will provide better performance in applications that depend on GPU performance, and they come with decent displays unlike the HP DV7-6C90US.
