I just upgraded to a new motherboard and processor. After re-installing windows xp, I am unable to access the old My Documents folder. Any clues would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

After re-installing windows xp
if all you upgraded was your motherboard and processor then why did you need to reintall xp. You hard drive should not have been effected. You may have had activation issues but then that would not require you to reinstall.

If you did reinstall windows then there a chance you selected to formatted your drive in the process, in which case your files are gone for good.

Unless you stored you files on a different hard drive, or different partition in the same drive, which i doubt because if you did you would certainly know about it.

Hmmm

I think all your files have been lost if you chose the reformat option at the beginning of the installation. If not, and you reinstalled without formatting, I think your files should have remained. Have a look in :C:\Documents and Settings\. That's where all the user documents are. You may have changed your username. Do you mean that the folder is there but nothing in it or do you get some sort of an error?

As soon as I installed the motherboard and processor, I tried booting the computer normally.
It got to a screen that allowed me to choose between starting windows normally, and safe-mode options. No matter what option I chose, it would stop and restart only to fail again.
After a few hours of "okay, maybe it'll work this time..." I decided to call the A-bit troubleshooting line. This man was very helpful and he told me that I needed to change the booting setup so it would go from a CD before the Hard Disk. He then told me to put my Windows XP disc in and re-install windows.

I tried the repair option... didn't work. Still got the fail-restart loop when I set the BIOS settings back to normal. There were no other options available, so I used the replace current OS option. The only folder that was overwritten was C:/WINDOWS. EVERY other file that was on my computer before the upgrade is still there. Well, I assume that the everything in the old My Documents is still there because I still see the directory in C:/Documents and Settings.
I even named my logon the exact same as last time. Except that this version of the logon is named Nick.NICK-0V05H3867Y instead of Nick that remains that in inaccessible.
Every time I even try to open the Directory C:\Documents and Settings\Nick I get a message saying that access is denied.

Apparently this computer thinks that this is a completely different machine. Even Itunes thinks that this is a different machine. (I was able to access all of my old music files because they were on a different Hard-Disk) When I tried to listen to the music that I bought off of Itunes I had to validate this computer for being able to play whatever song. When I did, it said that there are now 2 computers validated to play the songs.

Okay, that should be enough proof for anybody that my files are still there and that I am not a *complete* compu-idiot. (there are things I still do not know) Now, any help would be nice.

no one said you where mate :D

Does Nick.NICK-0V05H3867Y, your current logon, have admin rights. That should allow him access to Nick, the originals, folder.

Sorry I got so defensive...

yes, my current nick.blablabla logon has admin rights, and no I did not use a password on my old setting. blah, seems i'm stuck.

The old nick profile doesn't even show up in the control pannel/user accounts window. There seems to be a new profile called: "ASP.NET Machine A...". It is a limited account and it has a password. It does not show up on the logon screen when the computer starts up, nor when I log off of my current profile. I tried removing the password and changing it to admin-status, but no change. I can't open my old profile with it un-passworded, either. I did try out ASP.NET before the upgrade, so that's probably where it came from... but I'm not sure why. I may just delete that profile and hope for the best  . I'll wait for a bit, though.

Try this....

Log on as the administrator for your machine go to C:\documents and settings\Nick or whatever the name is of the old directory with the files you want access to. You will then need to right click on that folder and go to properties, then choose the Security Tab, Click add then type in or select the username you are using currently and hit ok. Now put a check next to full control for your current username. You should be able to access the folder now.

At the moment, there is only one logon that is available. It has admin status. When I right-click, go to properties, there is no security tab.

I've tried lookin for the security tab on other folders, it's not there...

I just started a spyware/virus scan with every program that I know of... I don't know what that's gonna do, but yeah.
