New motherboard?

Recently, when running dead space 2 on my HP dv6500 ( nvidia geforce 8400) the game froze, upon rebooting the laptop I got bluescreen. Logged in with safemode to schedule a disc check. Booted the laptop and picked up a book to pass the time. Next time I came back I had the white screen of death.
So, hooked a tabletop screen to the laptop and made sure it's not the LCD problem.
Now, I'm pretty sure I managed to torch the videocard, so my question is, can I replace it or do I need a new motherboard? Also, if I do need a new motherboard, can I get an upgrade?

I'm fairly certain you ought to be able to get a new card for it. Just look on eBay for the right one, be sure to include the model of your laptop in the search.

Before doing that, open the laptop casing up, and locate the GPU, see if it looks/smells fried.

nothing smells off, everything is clean and everything else seems to be in working order. Thanks for the help! You saved me a lot of time and cash.

kinda sounds like alot of the HPs ive seen, just cook themselves to death, you may be able to take it in for service, i think there was a place that did service on those, basically they reflow the chip and it works, but i think it was a 5000 they did it on, not sure the 6000 would be the same.
