ok, i have solved my parents comp problems so i am focused on building my own computer. i am going to buy things in pieces cuz im not just the wealthiest person in the world. anyways, whats the best asus motherboard under $120??? i dont know if it matters but is there a certain kind for someone who does alot of graphics?

Hey mate,

if your looking to do graphics, id suggest you get something that supports DDR Dual Channel.

Your main concentration should be to make sure you get a decent hard drive, but make sure it has an 8 MB cache as apose to 2 MB, you will really notice the difference in graphics.

Another thing to look for is a decent video editing card. I dont think the motherboard will be that much of a worry, just make sure its *relativly* future proof!

It might be worth splashing out that little bit more for one thats gonna cope with future stuff for longer

You can get something like the ASUS A7N8X-X for easily under 120 as well as the P4P800

decent video editing card
Huh? For people doing graphics (unless we're talking mass animation), it's all CPU/RAM intensive.

i have checked reviews on the "ASUS A7N8X-X" board. it seems like a great pick, but people were talking about no dual channel(whatever that is?!?....im a newbie) and not being able to post or random reboots. praetor, is there anything you can say to make me not worry about that, cuz i believe whatever you say.....

also, what would be the right processor for this motherboard? and what bus speed is compatible with it?

Theoretically twice the performance from your memory. You "enable" it by putting memory into specific DIMM slots (1-3 or 2-3). Now its interesting to note that although the website does not explicitly say Dual Channel, proggies like PCWizard, CPUz, SiSoft etc will report it as running in Dual Channel and when I run memory throughput benchmarks I'll be nailing 6000Mbytes/s -- certainly not the 3.2GB/s as spec'd for Single Channel. Thus, I would say that the board has Dual Channel support.

Well thx I guess but do take everything people say (myself included) with a grain of salt. As objective, accurate and openminded as I try to be, I'm no omniscient :)

I'd reccomend either the Barton2500 or the Barton2800. If you get decent cooling (~$30USD) you can OC the piss out of the chips no problem. If you do get a mobile Barton however which come with lower voltages and thus allow for more OCing .. make sure its a 333Mhz Barton not a 266 Mhz Barton (or just stick to the desktop bartons)

Hope that cleared things up a bit :)
