New motherboard?

Okay so this is a first thread for me, I jsut needed help really..
I've got a PC which I've upgraded to 4gb of RAM it's got an AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200 2.00GHz and a GeForce 520 graphics card which is kinda shitty I know but I'm upgrading it, but not now.

The problem is, at the moment all I play is like garry's mod really and the graphics card settings are automatically set to high and even when I set them to low it still runs on 9FPS!!! Either way and either settings it's awful FPS, my RAM is more than enough for the HL2 engine but I don't know much about my processor? I've searched for it and asked about it but it doesn't tell me much, and if I need a new processor I'm gonna need a new motherboard because mine is an old piece o' shit that can't even take DDR3...which is what I need.

So really is it just the processor and do I need a new motherboard for it?

Thanks for any replies or help in advance!

Your CPU and RAM is fine but you need upgrade your video card. Half life 2 engine is used a lot of video card. If you can't afford GTX 560. Try 9600 GT or GTX 260.

^^^:/ The "source" engine not HL2, uses little video card power. An old 9800 gt gets 45+ fps on left 4 dead 2. If anything the source engine is more cpu centric. (Not saying that you wont need an decent gpu, but thats not to say you can run these games on a crappy cpu if you have a decent gpu.)

Your cpu is a single core at 2ghz. That is massively pushing it for any type of gaming.

My suggestion would be a complete new set up. You definitely dont need a gtx 560 if you intend to only play hl2 and similar games.

That said, it depends what else you want to play.

Chances are if your getting a new cpu you will need a new mobo and ram. You will also need a new windows licence. A new graphics card will also help (can you see how much this is getting into a new build :P)

My only suggestion at this point is go for a new build. Obviously budget is a massive factor. But if you have one in mind people on the forum should be able to help pick you some parts if you building it yourself or suggest something else if your not.

^ Agreed...3200+ is a little long in the tooth....even a budget i3 or athlon ii x4 would be a nice improvement...as well as more ram and a new motherboard...better off spending on a new build than trying to upgrade that more.

The only thing you could do it, upgrade the power supply and video card and one good enough to move to a better computer when you upgrade the rest of it. Other then that, its to dated to fool with the rest of it.

I used to have emachine with AMD 64 Athlon single core and Geforce 9500 GT. It work pretty good with half life 2. So that is why i advice op to buy new video card.
