I have a HP Pentium dual core that was running Vista that the HD died (no backup disc any more) have XP and Microsoft 8. Replaced the HD with a 1tb SSD. Can try to load either or can I run a newer system? I hope grandkids can play the games their dad did on it. I know it is real old school but can baby set for a year or 3 if up and running. I have used an Apple for the last 25 years and did not keep up with Microsoft when my son graduated and moved out on his own.

If it had Vista and doesn't have at least 4gb of ram I wouldn't throw anything newer on it. You'll need an unused activation key for anything you put on it.

Should be able to install 10 with the 8 key, depends what you're going for.

But yes as per above the RAM will be the main limitation. A bunch of socket M systems for the early C2D and similar were limited to 4 GB (we still have one of these on our nightstand for plex). Might depend on the specific model if you can upgrade farther or not.

If you have the key itself for the Windows 8, you can activate Windows 10 with it. Did it recently with Windows 7 keys as well. Just install the correct version (Home, Pro etc).
For such an old system, you pretty much don't need to worry about drivers. Just run Windows Update and you're good to go.
