new partition

If you have Windows Vista you can use it's built in partition program. Unlike previous versions of Windows Vista's partition program is non-destructive. Otherwise I recommend a program called GParted. It's a bootable partition program that comes on a Linux Live CD.

I'm not sure if that's an answer to my question. I've decided that I want to put linux on my PC, so I cleared about 30 gb of hd space to create a partition..but, I dont think i can create a partition now...i think i'll have to re-format the drive..is that right?

Partitioning a drive means you need to format it but formatting doesn't mean you partitioned...if that makes sense.

If you've cleared some space to install linux you'll need to create some linux partitions in that space and then format them. The installer should help you with this if you aren't sure how to do it.
