Hi
Just built my new PC and now when i turn it on it keeps restarting - almost inastantly - like every 4 seoncds.

I dont see how i could have shorted out the mothebroard tho because it is not grounded on the case ot tourching it and niether has it been alowed to - any ideas? thanks

you plugged the power and reset switches on the motherboard correctly?

But yeah if that isnt the case it does sound like something is shorting the pc out

No i took all of the case connectors but kept the power switch same thing happened - there was a clicking noise every 4 seonds too - i disconnected the dvd drive and the noise stopped too is that normal

No, does the PC still restart with the DVD drive disconnected?

your HS might not be on correctly so it shuts down to stop any damage. this happened when i first built my rig

How would know if the heat sink is not on properly - there are 4 [pl;astic clips, which have been clipped on
and the power cable is connected - the HS doesnt seem to change at all - it just runs as normal

??

I dont think is it anything to do with the heat sink, the PC would run alot longer than 4 seconds before it shutdown/crashed/restarted. Do you have a system BIOS speaker plugged into you motherboard?

and also
No, does the PC still restart with the DVD drive disconnected?

What happens is i have the monitor plugged in and then tuirn it on - the LED becomes green and then a message comes up and says 'going to power save mode' which is the message that comes up when i have turned my previous computer off. then the led goes orange and a message saying 'check signal cbale' comes up. Then it repeats this process again and again which leads me to believe that the computer keeps restarting

Is this what happens to a motherboard if it has been shorted out

"Do you have a system BIOS speaker plugged into you motherboard" i am not sure what this is

And yes the computer / monitor does the same thing with the dvd drive disconnected

I suggest you have a quick look in your system case to see if it has a system/mobo speaker. Its small and has a red and black wire coming from it to plug int the motherboard.
Then if there is a Hardware malfunction you can usally diagnose what it is via the beeps coming from the system speaker.

Also what are your system specs?

intel core duo 5.8 ghz
lol

I can see a blakc and red wire comeing form the case that says speaker on it but i dot know where to put this.
refer to the motherboard manual.
I suggest you do this because it could lead you to what the problem is...
Also what PSU do you have?

I have found the place to plug the speaker into and there are no sounds or bleeps

I have a 230 w PSU currently

Lol at 5.8gh ?

^ think we found your problem

I would see if you can get your hands on atleast a 350W+ PSU to try on your PC

Also 5.8Ghz I think you`ll find its 2.8Ghz, just because it has 2 cores dont mean the frequency is 5.8Ghz

yeah it would power up but it would draw to much Amperage and will die. I deffo suggest you try a more powerfull PSU :)

Do you reckon the motheboard could be shortened out? When a computer restarts does it make any noises - such as hard drives or fans etc... because there is no noise other than the normal sound of the HS - so im not too sure if it is restarting now. maybe there is a problem with the graphics card buiolt in?
