Motherboard: ASUS SKT-775 P5B-E S/L 1066FSB
Ram: 1GB DDR2 PC-5400 667 MHZ

Both around £500, wanted 2gb ram really I could do that if I went for a less expensive proccesor like Intel Core 2 Duo E6300. Let me know what you think.

The second option definitely. Get 2GB of RAM and get the e6300. But why are you buying now, and not waiting for the price cuts?

Yeah I've seen something about that, are the Intel Core 2 Duo's coming down in price end of april? looks like I might have to wait then for another 5 weeks or so.

The second. And do wait for that price cut, use the spared money and put it toward another gb of ram. Also, what brand is the HD you mention? I recommend WD. Oh and that model Core 2 will be newly deemed E6450, because along with the price cut they are also adding L2 Cache to that chip, to a total of 4MB =)

Western Digital? BLEH! Cheap large drive... No quality. Of the biggest names, by far the worst.

Are you kidding? My WD drives are fabulous...they were inexpensive, and perform excellently.

Mikeuk, in addition to waiting until April (April 22nd, to be specific), I also suggest you get an Nvidia 8600 ultra, which will be released a few days prior to Intel's price cuts. The 8600 ultra will be a DX10 card, meaning it will be able to play the latest and greatest games pretty well. The best thing about it is that it will cost about $180 USD.

And Intelfanboy, it will actually be the E6420...the only models that will be E6x50 will be the models that already have 4mb L2 Cache...their FSB will be increased. The E6x20 models are the ones going from 2mb to 4mb L2 Cache.

Meh. The only hard drive I've ever heard that was really bad and annoying was MAXTOR. I'd say Western Digital is fine. So it's rather funny that the PC I'm using now has a maxtor drive... I'm waiting for it to randomly wipe itself clean any day now.

The Sapphire Radeon X1950 256MB PCI-E video card sounds fine. Another card I've heard good things about is (for reasonable cost to performance ratio) the NVidia 7600 GT 256MB card.

As for which option to pick (Athlon VS Intel) it's a hard call. While the Intel Core 2 Duos are clearly the cream of the crop performance wise you are paying for that. Athlon offers solid performance for a tighter budget. However, no matter which you go for, I'd suggesting trying to swing the 2GB of RAM (espcially if you plan to run VISTA).

I've had more WD hard drives die on my then any other. I will never use them or Maxtor. I'm a fan of Hitachi deskstar ... they have lasted me longer then any other drive. I put them in all the computers I build for customers. The samsung spinpoint aren't too bad either, I've had good luck with them.

I would avoid WD and Maxtor, but that's just my opinion.
