Ahhh, the wekkend :)

Hello everyone who clicked on this thread.

So, simple, or devistating???

I installed a new Raidmax RX-730ss Psu last night. Upgraded from 400w unit.
Now my HDD's will no longer power up.
My Sony DVD drive powers up.
Have tried all three sets of SATA cables on both DVD and HDD drives, all work and power the DVD drive, But nothing from my HDD's.
MB powers up, fans, leds, everything but HDD's, and they do not show in the Bios.

I have gone through all the checks. Everything is seated and snug, and I was as always very gentle with the replacement.

3.4 Ghz Pentium D,
Asus P43de MB (new)
Zalman CPU Cooler, (new)
ATI HD 4550 (new-ish)
Sony DVD drive (new)
2 TB Wetsern Digital Green HDD (new)
500 GB Seagate 7200 rpm HDD (new-ish)

I have been running this system with the 400W PSU for a few months with Win 7, No problem. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and computer runs through bios just fine, all I get though is the black screen asking for a system disk.....

Thanks :)

Have you tried putting the 400W back in to see if everything still works. If so get a refund on the hunk of junk Raidmax. Get a quality supply Corsair/XFX/Seasonic/Silversonic/PC P&C/Antec

Not a dumb question, yes, they are all connected. Once im off work im going to put the old PSU back in. Its just weird that both my hard drives wont power, but my DVD drive does. Have tried all power cabes from PSU, and all sata cables.

At least I got it from Newegg if I need a return.

One thing im not sure of is the amount of power needed by a drive to show up in the bios. Does it need full power?

Well, tried my other power supply. No HDD's. Im really hoping they are not shot. Might try another main board for them. Any ideas on problem solving? Im not sure of the next best step to take.

Honestly it sounds like the Raidmax killed them... I wish you the best of luck though.

Check the data cables too. I'll assume you've put your hands on the drives to see if the spin up or not.

Important follow up.

An important follow up.

My drives are dead. My data is lost.

I chose the Raidmax 730ss PSU for its price, and the fact that out of 430 and some odd reviews, it got a 4 star plus on Newegg.

There was no warning, and it happened immediately. No smell, no noises, nothing but death. I believe that this one review should be enough to warrant all others to stay away from anything but the best equipment for your computer.

In my opinion, 1 chance out of 430 normally would be good odds, but if that 1 chance is the loss of your drives, that should be enough to stay away.

FYI, data recovery will cost +/- $300.

my total investment after buying a new drive will be just over $600.

Newegg will give me the typical refund. Raidmax said they will look at the problem and determine if they are at fault if I send them the PSU and both my hard drives........... Not too sure about that....

Good luck :)

Have you tried unplugging the data cable to the harddrives and reconnecting them, just to make sure you didnt knock them loose?

Yeah tried for a couple days with a few different PSU's. Even took it to the geek squad....

One thing i"m curious about is how a drive dies. If they got a power surge and fried, what actually happens. Or static charge?

If they can do data recovery, then the disks have to still be good right?

There are many different types of data recovery. The easiest way is if the drive still works, then its just a matter of copy the data over to a new drive. If the drive doesn't work, then you send it in to a professional data recovery company and they either take the platters out and put them in a good drive or replace the heads or whatever needs to be done to get your data off the platters.

Besides changing the mainboard of the hard drive, what other things can I try myself at home?
Can anyone recommend a web site somewhere that troubleshoots and shows fixing drives. I have tried google-ing quite a bit....

I have. I took my back up drive to best buy and the geek squad couldn't power it up. Likewise I've installed another drive with my old power supply to the same MB and have no problems.

Thanks for everyones replys :)
