New PSU, now computer doesn't boot. HELP!

So I decided to upgrade my parent's Gateway 827GM with a new PSU. I got them the Corsair 620TX. I installed it and plugged everything in, but when I turned it on, it stayed on for a few seconds and turned off. Now it won't turn back on at all.

After a while, I unhooked the 4 pin block connector that is next to the CPU and all of a sudden, the CPU fan, PSU fan, case fan, and GPU fan powers on, but no video, no hard drive spinning, and the CD/DVD drives won't work. When I hook the 4 pin connector back in, I just get a millisecond of power and then it sits there. Can anyone help me please?

I also posted this in the PSU forums...

Make sure that you have everything connected properly, and that everything that is supposed to be plugged in is plugged in. Then I would try to get to BIOS if you can.

With my Corsair HX620 a similar thing happened. Do you have everything plugged into a power board? If so hit the reset button. That fixed mine.

EDIT: Sorry I failed to read the second part of your post so this probably wont make a difference.

Definitely sounds like a bad psu. Plug the one you removed back in just to be sure though.

I did and I'm having the same issue. Do you think it's the mobo then? I don't understand why unplugging the 4 pin would allow it to power on, but plugging it in makes it not power on. I've never seen this problem before...

I replaced the old PSU back into the case and the same thing is happening. Once the 4 pin connector is plugged back in, it doesn't power on. If I unplug it, I get power to the CPU fan, case fan, GPU fan, and PSU fan, but the CD/DVD drives and hard drive don't power on. I don't understand how it can power the main board components and yet not power on the simply components like the DVD drive.

I checked to see if I had everything plugged in correctly and secure about 10 times and I don't see any other plug ins on the board. Thanks for the replies by the way, I just really want to get this fixed. I mean I've run into a ton of problems with computers, but nothing like this so the help is much appreciated!

Try with everything plugged into the board. Unplug the P/S and set the switch on the back to off. Hit the power button on the case a few times. Plug the P/S back up and flip the switch to on. See if it fires up.

Well, maybe one of the rails is doa, and when it trys to put a load on whatever rail the 4pin cpu connector uses, it overloads a dead rail? I would have to say i think its psu doa vs anything wrong with mobo.

Hmmm well that is something to think about. I never even thought it could be a dead rail. I tried the original PSU as well and it's doing the same thing as the new one, which it was working before I put in the new PSU. No one thinks that I could've fried my mobo right? I checked every single capacitor and they all looked just fine. There was no spark or pop or anything either, but I'm still worried about a blown mobo. :(

One thing I should mention is that the PSU "4 pin" connector actually looks like 2 sets of 4 pins. Like, there are 2-4 pin square molex connectors that are split off and I can't find another single 4 pin connector that would connect to the same connector on the motherboard. Like I said I'm really confused .

This is what they look like just so now I'm not confusing anyone...

And here is the actual PSU on newegg...

Thats just the same as a normal 4pin, but as you probably know alot of enthusiast boards have 8pin cpu connectors, so its a 4+4pin connector so it works in either 4pin or 8pin cpu power connectors. Just a question...if the mobo is doing the same thing with old cpu, you sure you didnt miss a connection on the board somewhere, unhook cpu fan, etc?

Of course I could have missed a plug in somewhere, but I have double, triple, quadruple checked and yet everything seems to be plugged in. The only plug ins that I have for the actual board are the 24 pin and this 4 pin, unless there is another plug in that I am simply forgetting about and it's hidden somewhere?

I reckon you've probably missed a connection somewhere- quadrouple check everything (not just the power cables). You didn't accidentally knock or change the wires going to the power on switch on the case from the MOBO those things are annoying and easily come out when fiddling around inside your case.

edit: ok seems like you've already done that. Why did you want to upgrade the PSU in the first place? Did you install any other component?

Ok I will do that as soon as I get home! Thanks! Just for my information, what does that do exactly? Is that like jump starting the PSU or loading the power?

The reason I upgraded is because my dad said he was getting some really bad slow downs or crashes when playing games like Quantum of Solace or Fallout 3. I set the graphics to be on medium settings as to not overload the PSU but I figured that had to be the problem. We have a dual core CPU and 2 GBs ram, which is why I originally figured it was the PSU since the old PSU was a 5 year old Ultra 500w.
