New RAM doesn't work

Hi all.

I have just tried to put some more RAM in my friends computer. It isn't working. The existing RAM is 266mhz, PC2100 DDR 256mb (although system only seems to recognise 192mb). The new RAM is 266mhz, PC2100 DDR 512mb.

First attempt: new RAM in slot one, old RAM in slot two --> screen at start up (where the 'compaq' usually goes before the XP logo) says something along the lines of some files C:\system\ntfs... (I think). It tells me to insert the XP disc and select repair.

Second attempt: new RAM in slot two, old RAM slot one --> black screen before XP boot screen should start.

Third attempt: just the new RAM in slot one --> where the 'compaq' should be is a square of grainy vertical lines (like if your screen isn't connected entirely right).

If I just use the (I'm assuming faulty) old RAM it works fine, well it works ;).

Any idea's as to whats going on here...? Have I got a bust bit of RAM, it was only cheap off eBay....

Thanks, Doug.

You grabbed a faulty dimm off of EBay or otherwise someone else's headache! Never buy used memory unless it's from someone you know that can give you a history about the first system it was used on. Now you have to spend again for new memory hopefully.

I never even consider buying any used module unless by chance it was an older type like PC33 or 66 no longer carried in an attempt to restore some old boat anchor no one would care about anyways! :P Then you don't care either.

For something you consider your primary system however that's a totally different matter where you want what does work and comes with some form of guaranty to start with. Prices on new memory as well as other hardwares have come down quite a bit lately.

Thanks for your quick replies everybody.

The RAM I bought was new (at least sold as), just cheap and unbranded - was £10.00 ~ $17.00.

I will try and get some more of the seller.

Thanks again,

Doug.

You probably won't get much there just to let you know since that person having sold the item has moved onto something else or simply won't be logged on. He or she may have figured it was the wrong memory and sold not realizing it was a bad dimm either. At least when buying through a regular reliable vendor you can ship it back and complain to them about defects! Grrr....! :P
