New Ram problem

My friend got new ram for his Dell 4600. Before, he had/has two 256 sticks and now he just got a Gigaram 1g of ram. When he take all the old ram out and put in just the new one the computer makes 5 one second long beeps and nothing comes up on his monitor, nothing. He has DDR. What could be causing this??? Thanks!

did he put the RAM in right? is it seated properly?

Yes, he pushed it all the way in and the tabs clicked themselves into place

Could it be that he has to run two of the same ram, dual channel I think it is? Because this is what his ports look like:

yes, that would probably seem right

on my old Compaq you had to do that. You usually only do it when ports are like II II, not IIII.

try putting the 1 ggb one with a 256 one.

otherwise return the 1 ggb one and buy 2 512 ones.

Guys, cancel that, he just got the new ram and it isn't working, the mobo beeps 5 times, what could be the problem?
