New Socket?

I was reading the reviews on newegg about the X2 4400+'s, and one of the cons was that a new socket and DDR2 are coming out next year... I thought they wern't going to be coming out with a new AMD socket for a while! The thing is I'm about to buy my new computer (sig) and I don't want to buy the s939 and then they come out with a new one 2 months later. Anyone have any info on this?
 
Yeah its socket M2. Its going to be a 940 pin package and it will suport DDR2. I think its coming out mid 2006 (which means it will be delayed to late 2006).
 
Ya... well see, I know that the technology industry changes all the time... but I guess it has "phases." For instance the s939 pins were pretty popular, and now they will jump into the AM2 phase now and I want to "jump" into a "phase" early, rather then spend all my money at the end of one and something else comes out... yes i know, things come out all the time, but I'm pretty sure you know what I mean.
 
Yeah I do. The best time to buy is after the technology has had time to mature and right when prices start dropping. Its really up to you. If you have a working computer that can play the games you want stay with it till M2.
 
I have a decent computer right now... it's not the best but hey! Do you think that this new phase AMD will go through will really make owning an AMD CPU worth while? I mean DDR2 and a s940? sounds pretty promising
 
they renamed it socket am2, there's still plenty of life in a 939 system, its just that there'll be a new platform which promises more performance.
i'm still using my skt754 system and it serves me well, the only thing thats letting me down is my graphics card and memory.

"Next year" is a long time

What sounds promising is 45nm Intel boxes rolling at you in by 2007. Sure anything outside of 18months if indeterminite but it nice that Intel got 65nm down pat ...
