new system build: XP Pro or Vista Ultimate 64?

Planned system:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz
ASUS P5B-E LGA 775 Intel P965 Express
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
EVGA 256-P2-N550 -T2 GeForce 7600GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16

The only thing I can't really decide on is if I want to get vista or not? I will be using the new system for some photoshop, office (already have a full version of 2003 pro), some audio/video editing, and games every now and then.

which OS should I get and why?
 
Is that the 32 or 64bit version of XP Pro? Currently I dual boot both 32bit versions of XP on two different drives here. Vista is already planned for the third 500gb sata drive going in for a three way split there in order to having a working copy of the new OS running. Some have reported success running several games with the 64bit version. But most softwares and games even new ones coming out will still be 32bit.

Your older apps as well as some games may still see problems running on the newly released 64bit version. With a dual boot with two primary partitions seen on a single drive or a second drive added you could run both or even all three between two drives there.

Which version are you talking about there? 32bit or 64bit? Some are not rushing into Vista this early while some don't have a ton invested in older soiftwares and games. Yet each new version of Windows always seems to find some new bugs that need to be corrected with patches and updates.

I don't know, which version of XP Pro do you think I should get? I like the idea of putting different systems on different drives but I am really trying to cut down on the maintenance aspect. After changing OS 4 different times on this computer I'm trying to keep things simple. Maybe getting a second 250gb HDD and installing vista 64 bit later on?

This is exactly the reason why I am apprehensive about getting Vista. ME really pissed me off :mad:
 
I've run XP, 98, and Linux when going for XP Home as the primary OS when the SP1 release was seen. Then I ended up buying a second SP2 copy of the Home and later XP Pro with SP2 as well. When there were no 98 drivers for newer hardwares 98 was first replaced with other Linux distros only to see Pro go onto the second drive. With a new 500gb sata drive going in I will no longer use the second partition on the 2nd drive for backing up both XPs! That leaves space for...? Vista
 
Should I go with a 32 bit version of XP Pro now and a year or so from now get a second 500gb hdd and put vista 64 bit on it then?
 
I bought the 500gb sata here primary for storing large video files as well as a main backup for Windows and the occasional Linux distros or utilities. The average build now sees one or two drives ranging from 80 to 160gb with some seeing a 320gb drive. When buying a large capacity drive it is used mainly when the need is there. The three drives will now see close to 1TB on the system.

The one advantage Vista will have over XP regardless of whether it is the 32 or 64bit version is the no longer seen 4gb max on memory. But even serious gamers are running from 1gb to 2gb on average. Besides XP Home, Pro, and the MCE 2005 edition there's a 64bit version of XP and one for Linux as well. The decision on which version to run depends mainly on application. The gamers are planning out their purchase of DX10 cards and games while those running a good number of older ro more recent 32bit games and apps are waiting to see how Vista progresses. With older 32bit apps you might want to see at least one 32bit version running for older apps when deciding whether to dual OS or stick with one newer version and what it supports.
 
Personally I would get vista. I love it so far! All my apps and games work fine. Plus that will be the norm as time goes on. Back in the day would you have wanted to keep using 98?
 
LOL! Yeah cause I actually did go back to 98 about a month after I installed ME.

I think that what I will do is this:
Go ahead and pick up XP Pro and install it on the 250g and go ahead and install my old programs(photoshop office 03 etc etc) then like I said after about a year or so if Vista isn't showing any major problems, go ahead and get it and a second hdd and just have it and xp and I can switch between the two if need be.

What do you guys think?
 
In the meantime I will plan to be running both 32bit verions of XP along with Vista on the three drive system here very shortly. With a new sata drive in and working that will become the primary storage drive due to it being much larger. The current 147gb storage on the second drive now running XP Pro will see company with the latest MS wonder or will it be a $119 "Blonder"?!:eek: :P
