New to SATA

I'm about to install two new SATA hard drives, the first time I've used SATA.
How does the PC differentiate between the master and the slave, I am told you do do not set jumpers as on EIDE drives?
 
there really isn't master/slave that you need to set, if you have one drive, it'll be master, if you have two, one will be slave, it makes no difference in performance. I have two drives, one with my OS and one for storage. Once I unplugged my OS drive (don't ask) and didn't plug it back in. WHile trying to figure out wat was wrong with my computer, I noticed my second drive was now the primary in bios and the OS drive wasn't showing up. Point in that is that the computer automatically assigns master/slave
