New to Servers... HELP!!

Let's first start off with what I want to accomplish... I want to be able to do Video On Demand. Someone will enter the secure site/server from their house, PS3 or whatever is connected to the internet, and be able to click on different video files and it will stream on their system. I plan on using this as a Training website for my small company. If they have a question, I would rather then watch the video, then have to ask me everytime something goes wrong. I have a new 1T HDD and an older computer that will remain on and connected to the internet at all times. There is no OS on the HDD at this time. What other hardware / software would I need to get this accomplished.

Thank You, Peter!

hi, for starters, i would reccommend reading this Geek to live site

right, what hardware does your computer already have? for web hosting, you could do with something that has some decent stuff in it. the better your stuff; the faster your users will be able to access their wanted stuff.

i would hope you have a decent internet connection, again, this will affect the stuff on your site, for example, if your on youtube and you have a realy slow video loading, this is because the server (or your internet ) is not connected very well.

I hope this is of some help, just ask for more if you need it :)

thank you for your reply james... however, i dont think that solution will allow me to stream the video... only download the file, then play it.

the system is pretty basic... it is an old workstation computer used in a call center...

if you set this up and made the files shared your website, then you just need to put some video streaming software on there, similar to youtube, they just have a server with videos saved, with streaming software so they can be accessed, i think this is something similar to what you want ( never tryed it myself ) http://www.videolan.org/
