Ok so right now I have this played out old Dell. I am looking to upgrade. So far I am buying things off ebay and TigerDirect.com

As I get some new parts coming in I am going to start the build. I went to school for computer building... but only for 2 months or so.

I need some ideas and input on putting this together.

First off I bought a case...

Next I am looking for a CPU, Motherboard, and RAM

Here's where the questions come.
I know I am going to pick out the CPU before I pick out the motherboard. Can/SHould I just use the mother board from my current computer and just get a new CPU?
I want my program to run at the speed of light but I do not want to spend a lot.
Give me some suggestions please.
As for RAM how much should I buy?

Nothing comes up on google or dell's site...

I'd get you a 10% chance of us agreeing you should actually keep the motherboard, but I did want to know what you had. Regardless, if it's older, it's probably too dated for any decent upgrades.

Yeah, i would suggest you buy a new motherboard to, and as he allready said, 1G Ram would be fine.
Have u any ideas for what CPU you are gonna buy?

I think if your buying a new motherboard. (I think your old one will not be able to run Core 2 Duo) You should buy a Core 2 Duo E6300 for its performance/price, if you have more money take E6600. I would buy a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3, Core 2 Duo E6300 and 1GB of ram, maybe Corsair brand.
BTW, what power supply do you have?

The PSU is going to be the Q-Tec 450 Watt... I am going to add a lot of neons and other things...do you think this will work?

in short... no... it only has a 20 pin connector (most motherboards support only 24 pins these days) and only 16A on the 12V rail...

it would be better off to post you budget for each item or the entire build and we could suggest the best components available...

Ok sounds good.. like I said I am very new to this.. I only went to school for like a month or two.. didnt learn anything.. lol

I would like to use anything from my current computer that I can. If I can use anything let me know. Like the video card and such.
Once again I have a Dell Dimension L400C

I need to get the following stuff still (if i can use any current harware let me know):
Motherboard
CPU w/ heatsink/fan
RAM
Video Card
Sound Card
Hard Drive

I already got a CDRW and a DVD Rom

I would like to be able to multitask quickly and store a lot of information. The computer will be used for webpage design and storing a lot of MP3's. Also I would like to have multiple neons installed just for looks.

Why don't you just forget your current plans and start from scratch. You're giving incorrect info on the Dell or something because I can't find a darn thing about that model. Your PSU is WAAAAY too weak, as mentioned. And we need some idea of a budget. Obviously there's some budget if you want as "Cheap as possible" And what's a "Nice System"? I mean I think my system's pretty darn nice, but I'm sure others think it's rather low end.

Around $600
I would like to be able to multitask very quickly and store a lot of information... thats what I mean by a nice system.
My current computer is the Dell Dimension L400C
Here is everything I know about it:
400mhz intel celeron CPU

That would depend on what you've got now. For the most part, you should probably consider something new. If, you mean the Dell motherboard you've got now ... definitely get a new motherboard an system.

What kind of budget do you have?

The PSU is going to be the Q-Tec 450 Watt... I am going to add a lot of neons and other things...do you think this will work?
See PSU 101 for what to look for and some suggestions. That PSU is crap.

No budget... but I would like to keep it as cheap as possible and still have a nice system
Well come up with one. Cuz no budget can mean a lot of things.

Around $600
If we fit this within the budget then we can get something like:

If we up the budget a bit, say to $700, we can change the performance profile significantly

He might. He might also want a 750GB drive. Or a 3GB drive. Or a 91.5GB drive.....rambles on. ;)

Well,he did claim he wanted alotta space...
Twice and three times for performance ;) (also, next time would help to suggest an alternative too! :))

Here's a slightly different config, more space oriented

How does this look...
Well I already spec'd out a better system in every single respect so ... not so great. Also, you're missing a CPU.
