new to the laptop world need advice

Looking to buy my first laptop. I will be using it for general computing, Internet surfing, storing pictures and music. I’m not a gamer. I have been looking at the dell E1505. Looking for your feedback if this is a good laptop or not. I know there is no perfect laptop but for my needs this seems reasonable. I have looked at the Toshibas but seem more inclined to go with dell. My main reason for a laptop is I want to go wireless around the house.

Also I have a question as to what processor I should go with.
Intel core duo t2250
Core 2-duo t5200 (is this overkill for my needs)

Also what display
Xga
Xga with true life
Wxga with true life
Sxga with true life.

Don’t know the difference between each display.
 
Yeah that laptop is good, if your planning on watchin dvds/videos I`d try and get it with the WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) with TrueLife display. But its really up to you.

Processor wise you should try and get Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5600
(1.83GHz/667MHz FSB/2MB L2 Cache) at least.

There are CPUs for that laptop like the Solo Processor T1350 but I would invest and try to make it as future proof as possible.
 
Do I really need the t5600 processor or will the t2250 or t5200 fill my needs.

Also what are your thoughts between a dell and a Toshiba?

Also I see the t5200 and t5600 are 64 bit. What does this mean? Would I need this for my needs?

ever consider getting a mac? They are releasing 15" macbooks (which start at $999.00) and they would do everything and more out of the box. They have built in wifi/bluetooth, a firewire digital camera, you have itunes and iphoto which can organize music and pictures. iPhoto is a really neat application, and requires no drivers for your camera - it just simply works. I use it to organize my digital photos.

They can run windows if you ever have the need to run windows.

Of course there comes the matter of opinion...

I have been working professionally in the IT field since 1999, and since then I have supported and repaired just about every single brand of laptop in existence. I have had several laptops personally, and currently I just got a Macbook Pro. The Macbook Pro I just got has to be hands down the best laptop i have ever owned in my life. Its 1" thick, has everything I need, and everything comes standard in the package. No third party devices, no upgrades needed (though I did toss an additional gig of ram in it). I know some people are not into macs, and I really wouldn't own one of their desktops, but their laptops are top notch. Of course some people just do not like macs or whatever, but to me they are awesome for work. My laptop is not a gaming rig, nor would I ever really want to game on a laptop. Instead, my laptop is my work machine. I find myself 10 times more productive on the Macbook than any other laptop I own.

I also currently own a HP nc4200 12" laptop which is running Suse 10.2 and I like it, but not as much as my macbook.

hey let me know if that 9 cell sticks out, there was a certain model i was looking at at one point that if you got the 9 cell battery it stuck out the back kinda wierd, it didn't fit like the 6 or 4 cell. BTW you might be able to play some decent games with that video adapter you picked.
 
I did ask that question about the 9 cell. It’s the same physical size as the 6 cell so it doesn’t stick out. As far as the video card it was part of the e-value code I picked. It was a better deal to go with the e-code value then to build from scratch. If I built from scratch I would have probably gone with the integrated graphics card because I’m not a gamer.
 
thats good to know about the 9 cell battery, i personally wouldn't get one that sticks out just because i think it'd bug me. E-value codes are always cool.
