OK I just bought a phenom ll x4 955 3.2 GHz black edition cpu. My current motherboard with an AM2 socket is reading it as 803mhz and dropped my wei to 4.7 from 5.3. My motherboard is the weak link I believe. I was looking at the GA-MA785GMT-UD2 AM3 785G mATX Motherboard from Gigabyte, my question is:
1. This is a DDR3 motherboard...I have 4gigs of ddr2. If I get this board will I also have to upgrade to DDR3 ram?

2. It comes with a ATi Radeon HD4200 Graphics Chipset, I have a PNY XLR8 GTS 250...will this cause some sort of conflict?

I'd just like to point out for you that AM2, AM2+, and AM3 sockets are all different, despite how similar they look physically. The 955 is only compatible with AM3 motherboards. This is why your motherboard is only utilizing a fraction of the processor's potential.

Answers have arrived:

1. Yes, you will have to buy new ram. DDR2 and DDR3 are very different in terms of interface and compatibility.

2. No, and let me explain why. A "graphics chipset" is an integrated graphics card that is built-in to the motherboard within the northbridge. If you install a dedicated video card, the integrated video chipset is disabled and your gts 250 will take over.

There is no conflict with different brands in this situation, if that's the question you were getting at.

Help hooray! :)
