I had my old computer upgraded from a 1600 CPU to 5K with 2 gigs memory. Win XP was on hard drive but the shop said I had to buy another installation of windows since the old main board was "married to the OS". They wouldn't load from my XP disk because I had written the KEY on it so if I lost the origional case I could still load it. They couldn't usa a disk with felt pen writing on it. The Computer wouldn't boot up in the shop. I couldn't believe I had to buy a new OS disk so I paid the $435 and took the computer home. I loaded my old win XP disk fine but when I removed the CD and attempted restart I got the message "boot disk failure, insert system disk and press any key". I bought a new hard drive, thinking there was a HD failure and reloaded win XP. Again, loading went ok but once loaded the system would not boot up, same failure message, boot disk failure. The shop will not do anything about it. I took it back but 3 weeks later it was still sitting there untouched. I brought the computer back home and kept reloading the OS with different HDs but always the same message, won't boot. Advice please. I see Walmart has a computer with same as my new parameters for just a few dollars more and it includes vista. Appearantly buying a new commputer is a better choice than attempting to upgrade an old one. Advice most appreciated, I'm looking at a $435 pile of useless hardware.
