new user in need of some help!

hey evryone im new and in need of some help......sorry if its in the wrong place

basically my computer which ive never had problems with has stopped working.
when i turn the computer on it gets to the BIOS screen then after that it just goes blank...nfufin happens at all, ive bin told to boot from the cd, tap f8 wen i switch on to log onto safe mode but i cant do anything cos the screen just goes blank..?
has anyone got any ideas cos its really doin my head in i have alot of stuff on y computer and i dnt want to lose it all :mad:

So after the BIOS screen, everything goes black and that's all, right?
Please give some details about this:
1. Does the monitor go in stand by mode?
2. Does any sound come out from the computer when/before the screen goes black? (say exactly how the beeps are...long/short, number if any)
3. Is there a blinking cursor (a blinking ' _ ' sign), or just black?
4. Does the BIOS screen being displayed more than usual?

It looks like a dead hdd.

hey there,
1. no it doesnt
2. i dnt kno if any sound comes out cos i dnt have my speakers plugged in
3. theres nuffin it just goes blank as if ive turned off my screen
4. no the BIOS screen is just the same as normal
 
So just so I understand,,,u cant get into the bios to change the boot order? or does it completely crap out even tryin to do that?
