New version of XP?

My computer is rather old, and I'm planning on buying a new hard drive, motherboard, CPU & RAM.

I was just wondering would I need a new version of Windows XP? From what I've read I don't think I will. But how can it detect it's the same computer if you change so many parts of it?

when you change all your items in your pc your windows might not like it and also if you are changing your hard drive then a new install of windows would be better any how, to me if your changing all that then you might as well start fresh with the OS :)

Well I'm getting rid of my current hard drive, so I need a new installation of Windows. I was just wondering whether I can use the current CD I have, whether it will work having changed so much, as I have to activate it.

Your current CD should work just fine. Just go ahead and reinstall windows and if you have problems activating your copy of XP, call up microsoft and they most likely give you another CD key code.

You have to remove it first. You can't use it on two computers at once...

Well obviously I'm going to format the hard drive I use now. I do know you can't have it on 2 computers.

I was just asking if I would be able to install it all easily & activate it.

well, if you are going to use the same product key, use norton ghost or somthing else to make an image of your current hard drive.

It depends, if the CD came from an OEM company such as Dell, HP, Compaq, Sonly, ect, then it will only work on their machines, since the install will "read" the motherboard, and make sure that its from that specific manufaturer. If it's a retail copy of XP, then you should be able to install it on their just fine.
