new video card giving major problems :(

Good afternoon everyone,

A friend of mine bought a Sapphire Radeon 9250 from eBay. Anyway, ever since he installed it he has had major problems. most of the time trying to play any game results in a black screen that can't be escaped, and his desktop icons have gone all scrambled.

Most concerning is the scrambled image that occurs about half the time when you reset the computer (see attachedimage):

Image A: The boot screen (notice that Energy Star logo at the top-right of the computer screen.
Image B & C: The boot screen just before the WinXP screen shows.
Image D: The Windows XP boot screen.

I don't know much about troubleshooting these problems, so all i could think to do was completely uninstall his existing drivers, then download tghe latest drivers from ATI's website and install those, but the problems still persist.

Is this a driver problem/conflict, or did he get a dodgy video card and there is nothing he can do to fix it?

Thanks so much for the help :)

Specs:
Windows XP SP1 & 2
AMD Athlon XP 2800+
512 RAM
Driver version: latest available on site, posted on 09/21/05

take a look if the cooling is propperly installed.. it also could be a chance that the card is overheating.

He most likely bought a card that someone OC'd too much and it fried like an egg, then they figured what the hell, I'll sell it anyway. Cheap ass ebay :P

Just before you give up on it, try taking it out and re-seating it. (Make sure the power is off at the SOCKET first). Then goto the BIOS setup, and enable the RESET CONFIGURATION DATA option.

You could also re-flash the chip.
