New Video card needed

Hi,

I'd like to get my teenage son a new video card. I have a 305w power supply, a pci x 16 slot for the video card, dual pentium proc. 3GHz. I've looked online for cards and have seen a lot. I don't want to ask him because its for his birthday, and for myself i'm boggled by the amount of choices. I'm looking at spending no more than 250 - 300, that includes a new power supply if needed. I saw a 500w atx that would be fine for 60, but as far as a video card there are so many I'm not sure which would be best. All of them have good reviews, so I need help. Let me know what you think. He loves star wars online, call of duty, dead rising.

Thanks

Try the nvidia website. There is a page which compares all their cards. For that much you should be able to get a good mid - high range card, possibly even better if you do a good shop around.

I'm no expert on all the small details but if you select a card on the website it gives you all the details you need. Anyways I hope thats a starting point. :)

Hello and welcome...

1. What country you live in. There are members from all around the world pretty much. They know where to buy everything you can need.

2. The second thing we will need to know is what kind of computer and model number is it?
- Most power supplies will fit in most computers but there are exceptions and limitations on some. Please tell us exactly what it is. Then we can do some research and see what will work.

3. What does he play for games? This will determine what graphics card would be best.

You will need to upgrade the power supply...305w will not run much of anything these days. The good thing is, power supplies are not that expensive. With a decent power supply then we can start looking at graphics cards.

As far as a graphics card, you have hundreds of different options out there from a thousand stores. One of the important things to think about when choosing a graphics card is "will it fit in the case?"

Here is a recommendation for a power supply and graphics card...but we need to see what you have for a computer before you buy anything. You can get a nice set up for under $200:)

Antec are some of the best power supplies that are made...only thing I use.

eVGA graphics cards pretty much set the industry standard for performance, customer support, step-up and lifetime warranty.

You can get a nice 650W-750W for about $75 leaving you $200 for the card. You could get a 4870 or for a little less, a GTX 260. Both are good cards.
