New Video Card

Hey,

I'm in the process of upgrading my HP a6228x computer into a gaming rig. I don't have a big budget, going to college next year, but I was wondering what you guys think about how future proof the 8800GT is. I found a superclocked one on NewEgg for only $150.

My case is also a limitation. I only have 4 expansion slots, which isn't really an issue since I only have 4 PCI slots. A new mobo with case and possibly new RAM and processor is too much. So a single slot is preferrable. btw I have a 1440x900 17" monitor, so it's not too demanding.

I suppose I could buy a dual slot card, but I don't have the money for anything more expensive than what I linked from NewEgg. I might have to get a new mobo for a new CPU. I might as well get a new case too so space wont be an issue. I'm just wondering how long the 8800GT will last me.

the 8800 wont fit in it.

Dell/HP cases dont support dual width cards - the pcix16 slot is on the far left (no more slots to the left) so the fan bracket wont fit.

i had to get an 8600 for my pc for that reason (they are single width)

Also watch out if its not ATX. My dell (e510 and e520) take ATX psus, but the case and motherboard arent ATX, so cant be changed.

Looks like you don't have a lot of room .... i Would go with nvidia 9600 series for the best value... that what i run and i am very happy for the price..

the nvidia 9600 series is just as long at the 8800 gt, plus they're a weaker gpu, they're just a renamed 8600 gt

Oh please, if I knew where you lived, i'd slap you right now.

the 9600GT is NOT i repeat, is NOT a renamed 8600GT. Why? because it has a different core and is faster than the GTS you smart ass.

His case looks rather on the small side,to be honest i doubt the 8800GT would fit in there.

i have a 8800GT and its longer than that 8600GT and its single slot .

i would invest in a new case even if its a cheap one and move everything over.

i think it would fit, but i would be a bit worried about those ram slots, and sorry intel it seems i read that somewhere, but i forgot all about it

well from the looks of the pic it would miss the ram slots and even if the 8800 fits in there it will be extremely cramped.

i wouldnt be sticking a this into that case.

dont forget you have the power cable to the card go in the back aswell so thats at least another inch you have got to make space for + the cards lenth.

The 9600GT, The 8600GT and the GTS are seperate cards. It was the 8800 GS which became the 9600 GSO.

Well especially after the release of the GTX 200 series, prices of everything else are dropping. I haven't checked the 9600 simply because I know 8800 is a little better and is still only one slot. But that 8800 went from $210 to $150 in about 3 weeks. I'm willing to spend $150, plus I hear it outperforms the 9600 when it comes to AA and AF. I just want to know how long this card will last me considering how demanding games are becoming! Haha

In the picture, I believe I have enough room. People say it measures about a foot, plus or minus a couple of inches, I'm not sure which review I'm remembering. My case is clear from the back of the PCIe slot all the way to the front. My RAM slots aren't in the way. It appears that the HDD bays are in the way but they are not. And the cables that I have in are above the card. I'll check again to see if it fits. But size aside, I was just wondering if this is a good investment performance wise. I will probably get a completely custom rig in a few years to keep up with technology.
