New XP install - USB ports don't work !?

My very old Cybercom/Medion laptop has just been formatted, the first time I've ever carried out a new installation. The XP pro was not the original disk that came with the pc as I lost the original ages ago.
The install went well, but although things like usb pen drive and mouse light up, there is nothing recognised by the computer. Frustratingly, also the usb mobile modem won't work either, so I can't search the net on that machine for fixes.
In device manager the Huwaii usb modem is listed under 'other devices', but when you check it's properties, it says that it's not configured correctly, and prompts for a disk (the device should auto install from it's own built in software)
there are about 8 entries for USB related things, properties on those show that they are supposed to be working correctly.
What can I do to either :-

1, get the internet working temporary so that I can try to find drivers

2, Should I be looking to update drivers, or update the windows XP with the newest fixes....although I can't do that unless I can get the net connected !

what can I do ??

I've tried something that I read on the internet about disabling power saving on the usb ports, as windows apparently turns them off when there's nothing connected and doesn't notice when you connect something - this didn't work

also read that uninstalling each of the usb's and that when I restart my computer that windows will detect and set up the ports - I've not tried this yet, as I'm not sure it's the right course of action and I don't want to make matters worse. Is this worth trying, or will it cause me possible further problems ???

Usually some features don't work properly until the motherboards's chipset drivers are installed, though thats usually just stuff like ethernet and RAID. Did you install all the necessary drivers?
 
I don't have any drivers since the XP disk was not the one that came with the computer and a complete format and re-install was undertaken.

What drivers do I need to collect ?

Can I do this on my second working machine and write them onto cd ?

Usually the drivers are provided on an independent CD though the XP CD does contain quite a bit of drivers for different devices. You can however download the necessary drivers on another computer and burn them onto a CD and use that to install the drivers.

The drivers you need can be found out by looking on the manufacturers homepage for your laptop model and then for drivers or software. I couldn't find a homepage for Cybercom that had anything to do with laptops, however Medion did have a feature that allowed you to search for drivers and software based on your laptops model number.
 
So, should I look toward just getting hold of the USB drivers for this particular laptop, will they just be called usb or are there a complete driver pack required ?
 
You need to install what is called the chipset drivers (or motherboard drivers), check the laptop manufacturers site.
 
Fingers crossed that I can find what I need. This is a lesser known manufacturer and Is so rare that I was unable to recently find a battery for it despite several sessions searching the net
