New XP installation freezes on one time startup screen

I have a 3 year old HP Media Center XP desktop that out of the blue refused to boot a couple weeks ago. I tried the recovery process to no avail. I ordered restore discs from HP and did a complete install of xp. The entire process seemed to go well even to the last boot that said it was a one time start up screen and not to touch any keys etc until it was done. 2 minutes later, the onscreen scroll bar and the HD activity light stop and nothing more happens. I have tried this process several times with the same result. I also tried it with one of the other drives I had been using for storage. I only had one drive at a time connected however.

In the bios I have checked the disc for errors and none were found.

Any suggestions anyone?

I would say you have a bad piece of hardware somewhere. Are there any pci cards that you can take out to see if you continue to have the problem, like a sound card or firewire card. If you have onboard video and a separate video card, just try using the onboard.

If you can't figure out what is wrong, you will most likely have to take it in to a local computer repair shop and have them look at it.

Note: I do not recommend Best Buy/Geek Squad as they will literally rape you with their fees.
