Newb cooling question

My father, who's computer is very out dated, games a bit (nothing too high on his settings) and he fears his computer is getting too hot. So to cool it down, he took the side off of his case and set a medium sized, "desk-like," portable fan right next to it and cranks up the fan.
Does this work? It seems like it would; why not just have one big fan blowing air over everything? However, if it did work, it seems too easy enough for everyone not to be doing it.

It does work, but obviously the down sides are that it's noisier, takes up alot more space, and just doesnt look very appealing having the side of the case off and a house fan blowing into it.

Now what if you had a fan-heavy case, such as an Antec 900, would a portable fan disrupt the air circulation in the case, thus making all the fans in the case pointless?

well i'll tell you right now, it does work even if you make it a strong fan, but the difference is that he forced the two fans to go against each other meaning that he is also pushing some heat back into the cpu, so even though the heat is slightly cancelled out, you have to understand that air is an object, so he is pushing not cancelling, so yeah he should just put another fan on the case IF POSSIBLE and make sure the cooling is in a set direction rather than attacking each other.
