Hi All,

Any advice anyone can offer on alternative solutions, or why any of these components wont work well together I'd appreciate. Basically I'm building a gaming computer:

CASE - ATX with 400W power supply
MOBO - ABIT AN8 NVIDIA NF4
CPU - AMD ATHLON64 3000 venice core
RAM - Corsair twinx 512 x 2 (1g) XMS3200 400mhz matched pair
HDD - Maxtor 200G SATA 7200
DVD RW+.. - 16x Samsung/asus - haven't decided which
VIDEO CARD - Gcube ATI x700 256mb PCI Express
Monitor - 19 inch LCD 12ms
Speakers - Logitek X530 5.1

I've read most of the faq's threads, so I'm pretty confident that I'm on the right track, but like I said I'm a newbie . One factor I'm concerned with is that once I've built and used the machine a bit I'll undoubtedly want to OC it, is the mobo ok for this, can I lock the PCI express bus etc?

Anyway, thanks again, can't wait to get on HL2 CS and shoot shit up

the only thing i dont like is the video card. ( but, i dont have any expirience with the x700, so probably im wrong :) )
you might want to consider getting a x800xt ;)
and, what PSU have you got?

Yeah, looked at the x800, but it's quite a price jump, and I'm trying to keep the $$ down as much as possible whilst still ending up with a good system.

then you did pretty well :)
but. have you looked after the power requirements of a x700?
but, if the PSU is strong enough (wich i think is the case ) you have a very nice system ;)

That is a good choice, my system with the 6600GT maxes out games like Halo, Half-Life 2, Doom 3, and FarCry. So I am very happy with that, and the card doesn't cost too much either. :)

Also, does the case you were looking at come with the PSU? That's fine for your system, but I would suggest getting a higher power one, like 450. Or you could by them both separately, that way you would have more to choose from, and an aftermarket PSU is always better then the one that comes with a case anyway.

As long as the PSU has a high enough amperage on the 12V line you should be ok. Generally though PSU's that come with cases have low amperage (18-22a) on the 12V line.

case - ATX with 400w power supply
make and model of the CPU? have a look at PSU 101 to get some ideas of what to look for in a PSU.

DVD rw+.. - 16x Samsung/ASUS - haven't decided which
have a look at CD/DVD 101 for ideas on what to look for as well as suggestions

Well ditch the TwinX in favor ot Corsair's ValueSelect and you should be able to afford a jump on the videocard
