Hi guys,

This is my third post and no background in computer.

I am about to buy (have them build it for me) a computer from a shop here in melbourne (MSY)
.

Since I dont know about computer, I asked a couple of friends who have ideas in building a computer with the right specs.

Here is the recommendation:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E7300
Motherboard: ASUS P5QC
Memory: 2GB Kit 800 ĐDR2 Kingston x2
Hard Drive: Seagate SATA 250 7200.10 SATA 3.0Gb/s
DVDRW: Asus SATA DL DVD-RW
Power Supply: Cơolermaster realpower Pro 650w
VGA: 512M 9600GT Nvidia Asus
Casing: Lian-Li PC 60
Card Reader: Sony All in one card reader

The purpose of this PC is
- surfing the net
- video editing (for family videos to be sent to my out-laws/my parents, pictures, etc)
- Games - shooting games (sorry guys I am just starting out in games dont have any clue how to play counter strike)
- Basic computer stuff (Word, excel, common application)
- Music/movies
- Skype/Yahoo Messenger/Emails
- Banking
- I will be out of the country for 2 years and hopefully this set up will not be that outdated for possible upgrades
- I have already 500G external drive for ađditional HD in the box

I only need the box/CPU since I have already a monitor, mouse keyboard and speakers.

Is this too much for my need or a bit less. My budget is 1k for the box. MSY is the nearest comp shop I have access to. Hope you can make suggestion because I have no extra money to build a new one if this goes down.

Thanks

All the selected components look fine. One word of advice though: leaving a computer off for long periods of time is not a wise idea. I have read about systems going down after being left off for months (boot files becoming corrupted).

If I were you I would wait to get a system until you come back home because of this and for one other reason. In two years you could likely buy something much better as technology will improve for the same price that you would spend on this computer.

How will a file become corrupted if the computer is left off? That would mean something would have to shake the hdd so bad that the platters get scratched.

hard drives are magnetic and can become corrupted if left alone. This is really, really unlikely if nothing happens to prompt it.

As for the topic of this thread, it would be a waste of money to buy a comp for 1k and then leaving it for two years. I would be better for you to just save the money and get the comp in two years time. Hey, if you put it in a high interest account or money market, ect. you could have a bigger budget for the two years from now.

This PC is OK.
However, I don't think you'll need a 650W PSU for a single card. I suggest downgrade to a Coolermaster realpower Pro 550W and use the money to get a 9800GT.

In that case, don't build yet. In two years time, you can get something much better for less money - buying a computer now and just letting it sit there getting outdated while you're away is a complete waste of money.

I will be out of the country and I will be bringing the PC with me (off to vietnam to accompany my wife who will be working there for two years). This computer will be my get way from boring/ness or shall I say far from home.

Hope that after two years this PC can still be used for possible upgrades to keep up with the influx of technology. Chêers

Then by all means buy the computer. Since you are new to computers i would suggest reading all the 101s in each thread. When i first found this site i was a complete noob. After reading this i know 10000x more then i did.

kudos to all the people that wrote the 101s!
