Ok, here is my problem. I have 3 computers. One laptop, and 2 desktops. My stupid DVD burners on all computers have stopped recognizing internal and external dvd burners, so I can't burn DVD's anymore. When I insert blank dvd's, in my computer, it goes from DVD-RW to CD-Drive. I have tried three different blank discs. See images below.
Goes from (before blank disc insertion)
zjL6+

To this (after blank disc insertion)
G36B+

Operating system on all 3 computers = win xp pro with sp3 and all the endless updates and latest patches from microsoft. Ugh!

I tested external dvd burner on windows 7 machine and all works fine. When I insert the blank dvd media in this machine, It shows the right amount of free space and used spaced. Here is what I see on the 3 other computers when I insert blank dvd discs.

This is driving me nuts. All drives were working several months ago but I was not burning any DVDs so I don't know exactly when the problem occurred. Then, I decided i wanted to burn a dvd and discovered I could not. I even paid 24/7 techies to link to my PC to try and fix the problem. They could not solve and I am asking for a refund of my money (g0od luck I suppose). I will not use them anymore. They get your money and don't ever seem to fix your problem. They started off doing all the things I had already tried before I contacted them. Geez!

Things I have tried.
1. uninstalling drives and rebooting.
2. microsoft fix it tool on all machines
3. deleting upper and lower filter keys in registry
4. changing the assigned drive letters

*24/7 techies tried all these things too after I gave them remote access. I am so frustrated. My windows 7 laptop is the only thing that works and it belongs to another family member.

All blank CD's read and write fine as before. Hell, if anyone here can help me solve this problem, I would even make you a small paypal donation (LOL). This has driven me absolutely crazy. Please help me or offer any possible suggestions you might have. I will try anything.

**@ Mods and Admin(s)>>>>>>If I posted this on the wrong board, please move it to a more appropriate board. Thanks.

XP doesn't have built in software to burn dvd's like windows 7 does. You need a 3rd party app to burn dvd's on XP. You'll either need Nero, Roxio or the like. Is is possible the burning program got uninstalled on all XP pc's?

Ok, hi Jonh. I am not really technical so you will have to talk in layman's terms to me. Thank you so much for responding back. Ok, I have Nero 11 and Cheetah DVD on my laptop and Cheetah and Clone DVD on one of my dsktops. I have no DVD burning software on the 3rd XP machine(desktop also).

Let me ask you this. Even tho XP does not have DVD burn software built-in like windows 7, when you insert a blank DVD disc into the drive and go to my computer, should it not show you the correct disk properteis like free and available space pie chart when you right click and select properties?

I am so confused because I could burn DVD's on the desktop I use most often 6 months ago. Both desktop PCs have dual DVD burners. Laptop does not burn DVD's internally, only CD's. I do have a plexor external DVD USB burner tho that I have used before. Thank you for trying to help me.:)
