Sorry for the long story but I want to give all the details.
In Laws gave their gateway 800c essential computer to grandma. Worked before they left their house. Got it to grandma's plugged it in and it didn't work. Brought it to me and I replaced the power supply with a new one. Unfortunately that didn't fix it. No fans, no power nothing, all that I can assume is the motherboard went out. SOOOO to make everyone happy I offered up my old emachine 533 etower to give to grandma. I haven't used it for 4 weeks but it worked fine then. Pulled it out last night and replaced the dvd burned with a plain cd burner. Also noticed the power supply looked the same as the one from the gateway, so to ease my mind I wanted to try the other two power supplies to see if they work. I pulled that big main terminal block from the factory emachine power supply off and plugged in the new power supply I just bought for the gateway, turned it on and the fans all came on, so I quick turned it off. Great, new power supply works. I tried the one that I thought was bad from the gateway and I confirmed it was bad by trying it in the emachine. I went back to setting up the emachine for grandma, turned it on, fans came on, emachine screen came on and that is it, nothing else. I switched everything back to the way I had it and it still did the same thing, all that comes up is the emachine screen. I tried the recovery cd and nothing. Did I ruin something by plugging in the broken power supply? Help, any suggestions on either the gateway or the emachine?
